Lake Superior State University Assistant Professor of Biology Dr. Stephen Kolomyjec has been named faculty coordinator of the LSSU Hunt Creek Field Station in Lewiston, MI. LSSU collaborates with the Michigan Department of Natural Resources on managing the 2,776-acre nature preserve, which has been a research site since 1939.
“I hope to further the study of wetland, terrestrial, and woodland systems in this magnificent part of Michigan,” said Dr. Kolomyjec, a zoologist with field experience on three continents. “There are untapped opportunities for LSSU students and faculty, along with outside scholars as well as the general public, to learn more about this rich expanse of biodiversity and help protect it for generations to come.”
Dr. Kolomyjec, who specializes in the platypus, has been teaching at LSSU for five years. He earned a Ph.D. from James Cook University in Queensland, Australia, and a B.A. from Olivet College in Michigan.
Dr. Steven Johnson, dean of the College of Science and the Environment at LSSU, praised his energy and vision. “As the most active faculty member at Hunt Creek, Stephen epitomizes Laker excellence and deserves this honor. I look forward to seeing how he will leverage this unique resource and prepare meaningful experiences for our students who seek careers in the diverse field of natural sciences.”
Hunt Creek Field Station is surrounded by state forest. Protected research areas also include creeks, streams, and small lakes. The station has several buildings, including a residence that can house 18 people, plus a cabin, office, and pole barn. The station is located close to other important ecosystems, such as prized cold-water trout streams. Recreational use spans hunting, hiking, and camping.
“I’m always excited when a faculty member furthers our mission to equip students with the skills needed to craft a life of meaningful employment while enhancing the quality of life of the Great Lakes region,” said LSSU President Dr. Rodney S. Hanley. “This is also a wonderful example of sustainability and partnerships, pillars of our strategic plan.”
