About Center for Advanced Robotics Engineering

Learn about the center’s background, goals, leadership, and partnerships fostering excellence in robotics-related initiatives.

Background

The Center was established to advance the integration of robotics with practical engineering applications, developing future robotics engineers, and participate in research particularly in autonomous maritime environments and towards soft robotics gripping methods. It is led by experienced faculty, including Professor Jim Devaprasad and Dr. Edoardo Sarda, who have been instrumental in developing one of the first comprehensive robotics programs in the U.S. LSSU is the first university in the nation to offer a Bachelor of Science degree in robotics. Our goals include enhancing robotics education, fostering industry partnerships, and promoting excellence through collaborative research initiatives. Key partnerships with industry and educational institutions support our mission to excel in robotics-related endeavors.

Goals

Our primary goals include fostering cutting-edge research particularly in the autonomous surface vehicles in the maritime environment, providing top-tier robotics education and training, and developing meaningful industry partnerships. We aim to create solutions that address real-world challenges through robotics.

Leadership

The leadership team at the CARE consists of Dr. Edo Sarda, Dr. Joe Moening, Dr. Paul Weber, Dr. Andrew Jones, and Prof. Jim Devaprasad.

Jim Devaprasad

Professor and Director of LSSU Center for Advanced Robotics Engineering Lake Superior State University

Jim Devaprasad is a Professor in the School of Engineering and Technology at Lake Superior State University – which is one of the 15 State Universities in Michigan, located in Sault Sainte Marie.  He also serves as the Director of the LSSU’s Center for Advanced Robotics Engineering, which hosts over $3-million in robotics and automation equipment. He has been the architect of LSSU’s robotics program, which is the first Bachelor’s degree program in Robotics in the United States that started in 1985 and now has one of the largest number of graduates in the robotics industry in the USA.

With a career spanning nearly four decades at Lake Superior State University Prof. Devaprasad has made significant contributions to education and applied research in the field of robotics and automated manufacturing, earning accolades such as the Distinguished Professor Award from the Michigan Association of Governing Boards and Outstanding Manufacturing Engineer Award from the Society of Manufacturing Engineers.  He completed his BE degree in Mechanical Engineering from Anna University, Chennai and completed his MS degree at the University of New Mexico in Mechanical Engineering with a robotics concentration.

Jim is actively engaged in securing grants and equipment donations and fostering partnerships with industry through various committees and service activities. Prof. Devaprasad’s commitment to advancing the field of robotics is further evidenced by his service on the Association for Advancing Automation’s (A3) Membership Committee, the A3 Education Committee, and the A3 Advocacy Committee, and his involvement in professional development activities such as participation in industry forums, workshops, and conferences.
